International major event for product culture:
Winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013 will be celebrated
On 1 July 2013 in the Aalto-Theater in Essen, Germany, it is time once again for the best products of the year to take centre stage! For the 20th time, the large opera house becomes the setting for the awarding of the internationally renowned design prize “Red Dot” to creative designers and innovative companies.
It has become tradition for Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, the initiator and CEO of the Red Dot, to host the evening. This year, he will welcome the longtime Red Dot jury members Prof. Dr. Hamit Alpay Er (Turkey) and Prof. Dr. Ken Nah (Korea) onto the stage as guests of honour. Fashion icon Dato’
Prof. Jimmy Choo (Singapore), whose meticulously manufactured shoe creations have in the past decorated the feet of Lady Diana and numerous other VIPs and celebrities, is also expected to be there. In 2013, he celebrated his debut as a jury member and contributed his excellent expertise to the decision-making process for the best designs of the year. Together they will hand the Red Dot Trophy over to this year’s laureates in front of around 1,200 representatives from the worlds of design, business, politics and the media. The trophy is exclusively reserved for the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best and was recently redesigned by jewellery designer Günter Wermekes.
There is tough competition for these sought-after Red Dot awards. They are seen as an accolade for every designer or design-based company and their products. 4,662 entries from 54 countries in 2013 alone – these figures speak for themselves, highlighting the international relevance of
the Red Dot Award: Product Design, the origins of which date back as far as 1954. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec: “Several thousands of products were entered in this year’s competition for the award by companies from all over the globe, but ultimately only around 20% of all entries submitted won a Red Dot or Red Dot: Best of the Best. Despite the fact that design levels are constantly rising, these products succeed in standing out from the crowd. That is a magnificent achievement.“

All of the winners of Red Dot: Best of the Best, the highest award in the Red Dot Award: Product Design, will be celebrated on stage. One prize which stands out from all the other distinctions, will be bestowed upon the Lenovo Design & User Experience Team led by Yao Yingjia. The announcement of the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year is one of the numerous highlights of the celebratory gala. The special trophy, the “Radius” challenge cup, will be handed over by Porsche’s head of design Michael Mauer, who joined the Hall of Fame of the Red Dot Design Award in 2012 with Style Porsche.
In addition to outstanding product culture, the already fully occupied Red Dot Gala will also provide a very special programme for lovers of the fine arts. The renowned Aalto Ballett Theater Essen will present an excerpt from the current dance piece “Deca Dance“ and show the audience with explosive vitality what “Gaga Style” is all about. The musical performance by the Wildes Holz trio will be just as energetic, with the musicians proving among other things that the recorder is not just a children’s toy.
After the spectacular gala in Essen‘s Aalto-Theater, the visitors and proud award-winners can look forward to the Designers’ Night – a glittering party in the stylish atmosphere of the Red Dot Design Museum. This is where contemporary product culture meets impressive industrial architecture, as all of the winning designs in this year’s competition will be displayed in the special exhibition “Design on Stage“. A special place will be accorded to the design team of the year, Lenovo, with the presentation “Communication+“.
It is no secret internationally that success in the Red Dot Award: Product Design will be duly celebrated. Star DJ Chrissi D! will provide the soundtrack to a rousing evening for the visitors to the Designers’ Night.
